Three Percenters Member Sentenced for Involvement in January 6th Attack

Guy Reffitt of Wylie, Texas, was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison on August 1 for his involvement in the January 6th, 2021, attack on the United States Capitol. This is the longest sentence to date for anyone involved in the deadly attack.

Reffitt, a member of the far-right extremist Three Percenters militia was convicted by a jury in March of five felony charges, which included bringing a gun onto the Capitol grounds and obstructing an official proceeding. He joined the mob that stormed the Capitol and later threatened to harm his children if they were to notify the FBI of his involvement.

Reffitt was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, banned from associating with militia groups, and ordered to receive mental health treatment.

U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, who sentenced Reffitt, suggested that Reffitt’s statements on his desire to overthrow Congress were “frightening claims that border on delusional.”

While Reffitt never entered the Capitol on January 6th, video evidence confirms that he encouraged the deadly mob and led rioters to the Capitol.

Reffitt’s son, Jackson Reffitt, told jurors that his father threatened to kill him if he informed the FBI of his involvement. “He said, if you turn me in, you’re a traitor, and traitors get shot.”

Further evidence introduced at his sentencing shows that Reffitt intended to commit additional violent acts. In a text message from after the attack, he told other militia members, “We took the Capital of the United States of America and we will do it again.”

Although prosecutors believed that Reffitt committed an act of terrorism on January 6th, Judge Friedrich decided against applying a domestic terrorism enhancement to Reffit’s sentence.
